Our history
MEFL was established in December 2000 by the Moreland City Council, in the fallout of Victoria's privatisation of the electricity industry.
During the 1980s the council-owned Brunswick Electricity Supply Department provided pioneering programs to promote energy efficiency and renewable power to local residents. These programs were shaped by Moreland's leadership and strong local history of community-based sustainable energy achievements.
When councils were later forced to sell their energy companies in the 1990s, following the privatisation of the entire industry, Moreland council used the revenue and environmental leadership to forge ahead.
Instead of allowing their valuable history of sustainable energy action to be lost with the sale, the Moreland community lobbied the newly formed Moreland City Council to use some of the return from the sale to establish a community entity focused on energy. After much consultation with the community, Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd was formed.
Purpose of MEFL
The purpose of MEFL was to continue local action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the entire Moreland community.
Now, MEFL acts as a nexus between the Moreland community and the broader climate change action movement. It is the first organisation of its kind, and while we strongly support other council areas establishing similar approaches, MEFL has a distinctive leadership position as a driver of local climate action and has developed a reputation for bold, innovative and effective projects.
