Projects

Much of our work is undertaken in the form of collaborative projects with other organisations. Our current projects are listed here.

Sally-stephens-hwsDelivering Clean Energy Solutions (DCES) is a community bulk buy program offering energy efficient, high quality and cost effective clean energy solutions for your home.

During 2011, DCES will facilitate the purchase and installation of clean energy solutions for 1,000 homes across northern metropolitan Melbourne, with the aim to save residents money and reduce greenhouse pollution.

See our DCES section for more information.

A study by the Moreland Energy Foundation for Sustainability Victoria, May 2010.

MEFL is undertaking a consulting contract with Sustainability Victoria. The research project is gathering information about the energy efficiency of existing Victorian houses. The study so far has given us a better understanding of just how inefficient Melbourne's older houses are, what needs to be done to improve them, and how much it might cost.

MEFL is collaborating with Merri Community Health Services (MCHS) to reduce the vulnerability of people in Moreland at risk to the impacts of climate change. Specifically, it will reduce the incidence of heat related illnesses and deaths by recruiting MCHS clients to receive free home retrofits and advice for behavioural changes through the Warm Home Cool Home program.

The In Common Language Project was launched in early 2011. The objective of the project is to increase the availability of usable and relevant information to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, and support these communities to prepare for the effects of climate change and reduce their impact on the environment.

MEFL has developed a Municipal Energy Consumption Tool for NAGA to build a municipal energy use profile. It provides a profile of energy use by suburb for households and business across the municipality. Year to year comparisons can show changing patterns of energy use for households and on a per capita basis. Business and industry energy use and trends over time and place can also be viewed through the tool.

A small suburb thinking big

The Merlynston Village Green project explored what is possible when focusing on a smaller geographic area of Moreland. ZCM, with support of our project partner Yarra Valley Water, conducted a six month pilot behaviour change project to develop energy and water conservation literacy across Merlynston, an area within Coburg North, to enhance the community’s capacity to respond to climate change.

See the Merlynston Village Green page in our ZCM section.

Many European cities have already found the key to reducing greenhous gas emissions. New, cleaner and more efficient ways of producing electricity at a suburban level is the solution to reducing emissions and energy costs.

Moreland is just one of seven cities included in the Australian Government's Solar Cities initiative. Other cities/regions included are: Adelaide, Alice Springs, Blacktown, Central Victoria, Perth and Townsville.

Inclusion in this program means Moreland will receive funding to integrate a range of energy efficiency measures into local homes and businesses. This will include a combination of solar technologies, as well as community education about energy usage.

1 million homes logoJoin MEFL in an alliance of social, consumer and environment groups calling on the next Victorian Government to get serious about energy and water efficiency in one million Victorian homes.

While government drags its heels on an effective price on carbon pollution, our buildings and homes remain prime real estate for a major energy and water efficiency overhaul, and real action on climate change.

The One Million Homes vision has brought together broad community support. Environment groups (including MEFL), social welfare groups, unions, manufacturers and business have joined together to put pressure on the government to make a historic change in the energy and water efficiency of Victoria's existing residential properties.

See Environment Victoria's One Million Homes page for more information.

cars_on_Sydney_rdIn partnership with the Moreland City Council, MEFL is working with 16 local councils to improve outcomes in environmentally sustainable design in land use planning.

Expanding on our experience delivering training in sustainable design assessment in the planning process (SDAPP), MEFL will be developing an implementation framework and supporting councils to implement SDAPP into their planning operations.

For more information see our SDAPP pages.

Urban developments built now and into the future will have a lasting effect on the sustainability of our cities. However competing pressures can make delivery of truly sustainable development difficult to achieve.

During 2010-11, MEFL developed the Sustainable Urban Development Framework (SUDF) to help project managers, urban planners, and developers embed sustainability features throughout development projects.
