Community action

ZCM logoMoreland aims to take a strong leadership role in reducing community greenhouse gas emissions. We have committed to an ambitious, yet achievable,  target of zero net emissions by 2030. This will be reached as part of our Zero Carbon Moreland campaign, our primary source of community action.

This project aims to assist households, businesses and community groups in reaching this shared goal for a carbon-free future. As part of the Moreland Solar City project, funded by the Australian Government,  Zero Carbon Moreland aims to recruit 5000 households, 500 businesses and 50 community organisations in a campaign to substantially reduce their carbon emissions.

To achieve this we need the whole Moreland Community to get involved!

MEFL aims to be influential in the community and provide leadership in Moreland's crucial transition to a sustainable energy future.

Advocacy is yet another important way in which MEFL proudly represent the Moreland community. We have advocated on a range of sustainability related topics, consulted with government on projects, as well as being involved in innovative energy research and campaigning.

We have created submissions on a number of topics over our ten-year history, and have also collaborated with other like-minded organisations.

In 2010 we collaborated with the Alternative Technology Association (ATA). Together we provided comment on the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency's Enhancing the Renewable Energy Target Discussion Paper, March 2010.

And in late 2009 MEFL partnered with Environment Victoria, the ATA, Australian Conservation Foundation and Friends of the Earth. Together, we created Towards Climate Safe Homes, a report on the impacts of climate change on the housing sector. The majority of homes being built today will still be in place by 2050. Continuing to build homes to yesterday's water and energy standards will lock us into a future of high emissions and unsustainable water use.

These are just some examples of our advocacy history.
