Moreland residents encouraged to make a difference this Earth Hour and every hour.
March 19, 2008
The Moreland Energy Foundation is encouraging Moreland residents and businesses to switch off their lights for Earth Hour on Saturday 29 March at 8pm.
If every home in Moreland switched off just one extra 75w light during Earth Hour we could stop around four tonnes of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere. Moreland Energy Foundation CEO, Paul Murfitt said.
Imagine the greenhouse gas emissions the Moreland Community could save if every home turned off all their lights and electrical appliances for even one hour.
Following the success of Earth Hour in Sydney 2007, cities and towns from around the world are taking part in Earth Hour 2008 by turning off their lights for an hour. Earth Hour aims to draw global attention to the issue of climate change and the ways that we can make a difference.
Switching off your lights is just one action you can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mr Murfitt said.
The average home produces around 12 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, but with some simple changes it is possible for most homes to halve their energy use and be just as comfortable.
Top actions to do around the home include; installing ceiling insulation, energy efficient lighting and a low flow showerhead; turning off lights and appliances including standby power when not in use; and getting your electricity from GreenPower. GreenPower is energy from renewable sources such as sun, wind and waste. Signing up to GreenPower can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%.
Moreland residents can sign up to GreenPower through Community Power, a partnership between Darebin City Council and the Moreland Energy Foundation. A new Community Power product will be launched by Darebin City Council at their Earth Hour event.
