Save Water- Switch to GreenPower

May 31, 2007

Moreland residents may be surprised to hear that you can save water by switching off your lights and getting your electricity from renewable energy sources.

"One of the best things households and businesses can do to help ease both the water crisis and climate change is to get their electricity from GreenPower." Moreland Energy Foundation CEO Jim Downey said.

In Victoria, over 90% of our electricity comes from coal fired power stations, which use huge amounts of water. According to the ABS, the electricity and gas industry are amongst the highest water uses in the state, consuming 22% of all water used.

"For every mega watt of power a coal fired power station generates, they take on average two tonnes of water." Jim Downey said. "This means it requires thousands of litres of water per year to power the average Victorian home."

By comparison, wind generation, solar power and energy efficiency take almost no water to operate and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.

GreenPower is Government accredited renewable energy from sources such as the sun, wind, water and waste. Moreland residents can elect to get their electricity from GreenPower simply by calling up their power company and asking what GreenPower products they offer.

Alternatively visit www.greenpower.gov.au or www.greenelectricitywatch.org.au to see what other GreenPower options are available.

"GreenPower costs a bit extra but it is only about the same as a cappuccino each week and still a far cheaper option than climate change." Jim Downey said. "Let's get the whole of Moreland switching to GreenPower!
