Switch off your standby power this World Environment Day

The Moreland Energy Foundation is encouraging Moreland residents to make a difference this World Environment Day by switching off their standby power.
According to Sustainability Victoria, standby power in a typical home can account for over 10% of electricity consumption and be costing you an extra $180 a year.
This extra energy use is also leading to around 17,000 balloons of greenhouse gas pollution per house being emitted into the atmosphere each year.
Victoria is seeing an increase in household electricity use as more and more houses install appliances that use power all day and night, even when not in use.
Common household appliances which use standby power include televisions, video recorders, DVD players, stereo systems, microwave ovens, mobile phone charges and cordless phones.
Computers, monitors, scanners and printers are the most significant contributors to standby power and can be costing you $40 each year by leaving on when not in use.
"In many cases, standby power serves no useful function and is simply costing you money that you don't need to be paying, and producing greenhouse gas pollution that you don't need to be producing." Moreland Energy Foundation CEO Jim Downey said.
