Vic Government energy initiatives consistent with community expectations
July 17, 2006
MEFL welcomes the renewable energy initiatives announced by the Premier Steve Bracks, and has distributed the following press release.
The renewable energy initiatives announced today by the Premier Steve Bracks have been welcomed by Victoria's only community group solely dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas pollution - the Moreland Energy Foundation.
"These initiatives are a great step forward by the Victorian Government and are entirely consistent with community expectations on climate change caused by greenhouse gas pollution. We congratulate the Premier on this announcement," said Jim Downey Chief Executive Officer of the Moreland Energy Foundation.
"The Victorian community is now very aware that climate change is a serious issue. Over the past 2 years we have lived with its impacts through flood events, bushfires and intensified storms. It is now an issue that people directly experience and they want Governments and political parties of all persuasions to do something about it. The Victorian Government has responded meaningfully."
"The renewable targets set today by Premier Bracks, together with funding for research into cleaner technologies is a progressive step in the right direction. Overseas experience tells us that these technologies are booming right now with very large uptakes with the right Government policies put in place. It is pleasing to see Victoria is positioning itself to take advantage of the environmental, investment and business benefits that will come with these cleaner sources of energy."
"We look forward to further announcements by the Government in the lead up to the election including energy savings targets. Today's announcements are very welcome and I know will be welcomed in the community," said Mr Downey.
