June 01, 2005
In the lead up to World Environment Day (5 June) Victorian Minister for Environment, the Hon. John Thwaites will officially launch the Phoenix Fridge Project, a scheme that targets overuse and inefficiency of old fridges through a repair, retrofit and recycling project.
Run by the Moreland Energy Foundation in partnership with the Brotherhood, tomorrows event marks the completion of the pilot schemes 100th fridge target and its launch to an ongoing project.
Fridges are one of the major energy users in the home, responsible for around 15% of household greenhouse emissions in Australia, Esther Abram, Chief Executive Officer of the Moreland Energy Foundation said.
If fridges arent working well they use more energy and cost more to run and increase greenhouse gas emissions.
This ground-breaking project promotes the use of energy efficient fridges by repairing and retrofitting old fridges to improve quality and efficiency for low income households.
Ian McHutchison, General Manager of the Brotherhoods Social Enterprises, said the project achieves a social and environmentally sustainable outcome as well as financial benefit.
With the help of Moreland Energy Foundation we are able to increase the energy efficiency of our fridges, making them cheaper to run for low income households, Mr McHutchison said.
At the same time its better for the environment by providing energy efficient fridges to our customers greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced.
The launch will take place at the Brotherhood of St Laurence Warehouse, 130 Barkly Street, Brunswick, 12-1pm, Wednesday 1 June 2005.
