Help your kids keep their cool this summer

February 22, 2005

A unique project is helping children and staff at Moreland kindergartens to keep cool without having to install and run costly air conditioning. The Kinda Cooling Project is now recruiting participants for 2005.

“Kindergartens are under pressure to raise funds every year just to keep afloat” said Esther Abram, CEO of the Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd (MEFL). “Kinda Cooling provides financial benefits, through keeping their energy bills low, while making sure the kids are comfortable during the hottest days of summer”.

Kinda Cooling was piloted with Brunswick Kindergarten in 2002. With MEFL’s help, Brunswick Kindergarten raised $1200 to install measures which keep the building cool without the use of energy, including blinds and night ventilation. Staff at the kindergarten are pleased with the results and are willing to share their experiences with other kindergartens considering joining the program.

“By helping kindergartens become cooler and keep their energy bills low, MEFL hopes to encourage the families using the facilities to take on similar measures at home”, said Esther Abram. “Through raising funds by selling low energy light globes in a “chocolate drive” style, we are encouraging energy savings in the wider community.”

To kick off the project in 2005, an information evening and free BBQ will be held at the Brunswick Kindergarten, 61 Glenlyon Rd on Wednesday 23rd February from 6pm.
