New report finds 30% cuts in Australia's emissions achievable by 2020

March 03, 2008

The report from global management consultants McKinsey has found that significantly reducing Australia's greenhouse emissions is achievable but requires rapid action.

The Report titled: An Australian Cost Curve for Greenhouse Gas Reduction is based on methodology the firm has used in the US, UK, Germany and globally where the costs and abatement potential of different technologies is compared.

The Report Found that:

  • A significant reduction in Australian GHG emissions is achievable - 30 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 60 percent by 2030 without major technical breakthroughs or life style changes
  • Reducing emissions is affordable - with an average annual gross cost of approximately $290 per household to reduce emissions in 2020 to 30% below 1990 levels.
  • Achieving significant emissions reductions requires prompt action from Government, business and consumers.
  • The report investigates opportunities to cut greenhouse gases across the economy, including stepping up investment in wind power, using tougher regulations to lift energy efficiency, speeding up new technologies through tax breaks and subsidies, lifting fuel efficiency standards and increasing the use of renewable energy.
