UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Bali, 2007

December 18, 2007

Now the conference is over, find out what the outcomes are and what this means for future climate negotiations.

The Bali climate meeting held over two weeks from 3rd-15th December brought together more than 10,000 representatives from 187 countries along with observers from a wide range of non government organisations. The conference has resulted in the Bali Road map that will set the ground rules for the next two years of negotiations on a post 2012 international agreement on climate change. The next meeting will be held in Copenhagen in 2009.

A crucial outcome of the meeting is that members of the Kyoto protocol including Australia agreed that emission reductions of 25-40% will be necessary by 2020 (compared to 1990 levels). These targets will lead to further binding emissions reduction targets.

Moreland aims to take a strong leadership in reducing emissions and has already committed to zero net emissions from the community by 2030 and zero net emissions from Moreland Council by 2020. In 2008 the Moreland Energy Foundation in partnership with Moreland City Council will be launching a new Zero Carbon Moreland Campaign which will assist Moreland residents, businesses, organisations and community groups in reaching this target over the next years.
