How the project worked
MEFL's Positive Charge team dealt directly with home owners to ascertain whether or not the program would suit their needs and energy usage and to advise on the best sized system for them. We then guided them through each step of the process ensuring that they fully understood the commitment and how best to use their electricity for maximum savings.
The repayment plan is attached to the house, so that if ownership of the house should change before the ten year period is up then the next owner will have the benefit of buying a house complete with a solar PV system, which they can pay back at minimal cost through their rates.
The 280 installations are now almost complete and so far all households have been really happy with the process and how smoothly it has all gone. We will be following up with them in a few months to obtain some data on the electricity savings and will report back!In the meantime here is picture of Mal Owen from Thornbury, who said that without the repayment scheme through the rates payments he would never have been able to consider installing solar on his roof and he is so happy that Darebin City Council were able to offer it, as he is a big fan of solar. Mal would love to see other councils offer a Solar $aver program of their own.
