Towards Zero Net Emissions in the NAGA region

Towards Zero Net Emissions in the NAGA region
The Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action has launched its strategic blueprint - the first of its kind in Australia - for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent by 2020.
NAGA's regional strategy to address climate change, Towards Zero Net Emissions for the NAGA Region (TZNE) represents a major collaboration between the NAGA members. It aims to achieve significant reductions in carbon emissions in the fast-growing region of northern metropolitan Melbourne, in which 25% of the city's population live.
TZNE in brief
Without action, emissions from the region are anticipated to grow by almost 19% to over 25 Mt CO2-e by 2020. TZNE proposes new projects which not only stabilise the growth of emissions, but lead to reductions of over 6 Mt CO2-e, or 24% (above business-as-usual) by 2020.
The industrial, commercial and residential sectors, along with private transport dominate the region's emissions profile. TZNE focuses on these areas for action.
Emissions reductions are achieved through a combination of energy efficiency, promoting more efficient technologies and renewable energy supplies, establishing new energy services and improving planning for more liveable and resilient communities in a low-carbon, climate-changed world.
TZNE in action
TZNE was completed in mid 2009 and has now been endorsed by all NAGA members. NAGA members are active in planning and implementing projects arising from TZNE. The delivery of the strategy requires working with multiple partnerships and stakeholders. NAGA is coordinating this important regional collaboration.
Energy use data
Access to local energy use data is critical for planning, monitoring and measuring progress. NAGA continues to explore a way for councils and other government bodies to access community energy usage data at the local level. NAGA has been working closely with industry and government to reach agreements on data sharing. DSE has recently obtained local data, gathered directly from electricity and gas distributors, that provides detailed information of household energy use across Victoria from 2004 to 2007.
